Cebu City assists mendicants to return home

CEBU CITY - August 26 (PIA) -- The Cebu City government spent some P10,600 as financial assistance for the transportation of mendicants who wants to return to their respective provinces under its "Balik Probinsya" program.
Cebu City Anti- Mendicancy Task Force head Isabelita Ganub said the program aims to lessen the population of mendicants and decongest the sidewalks from these homeless people.
At present the Task Force already identified eight persons (8) who will be returning to their respective provinces and pocketed financial assistance that range from P1000 to P2, 500 through the program.
As reported financial assistance varied depending on the distance of the beneficiaries’ original settlement from Cebu City and the kind of transportation that would bring them home.
To make sure that the financial assistance will really convey the purpose mendicants will be accompanied by Task Force personnel in procuring tickets for their transportation in returning to their respective places.
Not just financial assistance Cebu City Government also provided temporary shelter for homeless families by renovating the second floor of the Taboan Public Market as home for these families settling in the streets and sidewalks. (PIA-Cebu/mbcn/as)
