in Talisay City, Cebu to benefit more pupils
‘undertaking is a result of PPP to serve more poor school children’
CEBU CITY, Sept. 6 (PIA) -- More poor school children in the elementary and secondary level in Barangay Lawaan I in Talisay City, Cebu are encouraged to go to school as this Thursday, September 8 will witness the inauguration of a 19-classroom public school building in Lawaan I Elementary and National High School located in said area.
The newly-constructed 19-classroom public school building is the first of the five-phase 120-classroom new school building of Lawaan I Community-Based Public School Development Program of an integrated Elementary and National High School Building, this is stated by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-7 Regional Office.
Believing that education significantly contributes to a better future especially for the poor, the undertaking to construct the new public school building and remaining classrooms yet to be constructed is an effort of a public-private partnership (PPP), this is said.
According to DAR-7, the completion of the five-phase public school building will serve 1,576 elementary pupils and 1,208 high school students in Barangay Lawaan I.
Awarding of plaques of recognition to key private partners of the project will be done during the inauguration on Thursday morning. The private partners are Perciles P. Dakay, Ph.D., president and general manager of Dakay Construction and Development Construction and Development Corporation; Board of Trustees of the University of San Carlos; Fr. Ulrich Schlecht, SDV, member of the Divine Word Missionary Congregation – Southern Province; Jeffrey Traya, president of Lawaan I Public Elementary School PTA, Inc.; Reynold Singco, Lawaan I School Principal, the local government unit of Talisay City, and the DAR-7 Regional Office through PARO I Maria Lourdes Mariano. DOE discovers possible oil source in Cebu town

CEBU CITY, Sept. 5 (PIA) -- The Department of Energy (DOE) has discovered a possible oil source in the mountain barangay of Alegria, southern Cebu as drilling operation is expected to start next year.
Energy Assistant Secretary Ramon Allan Oca said that after the successful oil exploration conducted by the DOE team in the area, it was discovered and found to be an oil source that can be used as motor oil.
It is reported that as of this time, the DOE surveying team that started its exploration a few months ago continues to observe and test the said area to ensure that the oil source is usable.
“If the oil found in Alegria is proven to be clean then it can be used by the oil stations here in Cebu,” Oca declared.
Oca said in case the area yields positive with oil, then the Municipality of Alegria is very privileged because this signals a rise in their local economy attracting more business investments that can translate to more job opportunities for its residents
The impact of having a positive oil source will not only benefit Alegria but the whole province of Cebu as well and the entire country, the DOE official said.
Oca said that with this positive development, two power plants are expected to rise in the province --- the 1.5 megawatt power plant in Libertad, Bogo City and the oil station in Alegria. (PIA- CEBU)

DOST-7 Energy Audit Members receive AEMAS Certification

CEBU CITY, Sept. 5 (PIA) -- Recognition has been bestowed on four members of the Energy Audit Team of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Central Visayas for having achieved the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) Energy Manager Certification, the world’s first regional certification system for energy managers and energy end-users.
Acknowledged were Engr. Edilberto Paradela, Engr. Juan Edgar Osorio, Engr. Roberto Edra and Engr. Jose Mari Bigornia where each was given individual certificates during the launching of the ASEAN AEMAS on August 26 at the New World Makati City Manila Hotel.
The certificate served as recognition in their fulfillment of all obligations under the ASEAN AEMAS. This was signed and awarded by Christopher Zamora, Acting Director of ASEAN Centre for Energy and Ernesto Casis, AEMAS Director in the Philippines.
As an AEMAS certified Energy Manager, they will be able to implement a sustainable energy management system based on the ISO 50001 with the additional benefits of achieving real and measurable energy savings, CO2 emission reductions and make their companies eligible to acquire the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) certification.
“This is another achievement that we can boast. We intend to undergo this training to further enhance our skills and competence so that we can also be at par with other ASEAN countries that have been practicing energy efficiency and conservation measures,” Engr. Paradela said.
“The certification is obtained after completing the three-day lecture conducted by AEMAS certified-trainers and able to get above 90 percent score of the classroom-type test,” Paradela added.
Funded by the European Union under the Switch-Asia Program, the AEMAS is currently being implemented by the ASEAN Center for Energy in eight ASEAN member states namely, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. (PIA-Cebu with PR from DOST-7)

Consolacion Women’s groups receive financial assistance from DOLE-7

CEBU CITY, Sept. 6 (PIA) -- Three women’s organizations in Consolacion, Cebu received financial assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment in the region (DOLE-7) recently.
These organizations are based in barangays Tayud, Nangka and Cansaga in Consolacion town.
DOLE-7 acting regional director Exequiel Sarcaoga handed over the P300T to Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado as the seed money for livelihood projects of the groups.
Mayor Alegado gave each of the three organizations a check for P100T as financial assistance to start their livelihood projects such as rug making, fashion accessories, decorative wallets, among others.
Present during the turn-over ceremony were Councilors Nilo Ferraen, Brando Cuizon, Julius Alegado, Iluminado Alin, ABC President Marilou Casul and PESO Manager Romulo Mindajao.(PIA7/mbcn/hfg)

PCIC distributes insurance to farmers, fishermen

CEBU CITY, September 5 (PIA) - The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) distributed recently certificates of insurance worth P100M to a thousand farmers and fishermen in 12 towns of Northern Cebu.
PCIC-7 Alberto Divinagracia said this is the first in the entire country where the provincial government insured farmers and fishermen as well as their products and livestock.
"We hope this will be replicated throughout the country," Divinagracia added.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and PCIC President Jovy Bernabe led the distribution held at the San Remegio Sports Complex and attended by Department of Agriculture (DA-7) regional director Leo Cañeda; fourth district Rep. Benhur Salimbangon; mayors and other local officials.
The provincial government will also shoulder the premium of these farmers and fishermen corresponding to the value of their livestock and agricultural products.
At P35 per farmer or fisherman, they already have an insurance coverage of P50,000 plus P5,000 medical and burial assistance from PCIC, Divinagracia also said the office is committed to process the claims within 15 to 20 days.
The first batch that received their certificates of insurance were from the municipalities of Asturias, Balamban, Tabuelan, San Remegio, Medellin, Bantayan, Santa Fe, Madridejos, Daanbantayan, Borbon, Tabogon and Sogod.
Cebu Province targets around 35,000 farmers and fishermen to be covered with insurance within this year.
The Capitol and PCIC developed a comprehensive package for farmers and fisherfolk who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
Divingracia explained, the insurance policy will not only cover the usual crop and livestock, but will also include high-value crops, fishponds and fish cages locally known as bubo.(PIA7/mbcn/hfg)
