Crime prevention starts at home, PNP-7 says
By Fayette C. Rien

CEBU CITY, Aug 31 (PIA) -- Education on crime prevention should start at home as parents wield influence over their children, said Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Deputy Director for Administration C/Supt. Samuel Yordan.

Promoting a peaceful and safe environment is not the task of the police alone but rather a community effort involving all sectors in society said Yordan, as the police prepares for the annual observance of the National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW), September 1-7.

Parents should educate their children on how to prevent being victimized by criminal elements by advising them they should not stay out too late, said Yordan.

“Crime prevention should be 90 percent while only 10 percent should be crime solution,” Yordan said during the recent "Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis" (TSIP) Forum.

Yordan emphasized the significance of the NCPW which aims to increase public awareness on crime prevention.

“I would say that public awareness is already very high as well as community support to prevent crimes. In fact, our crime volume in the region registered a declining trend,” added the police official.

Crime volume in Central Visayas for the past seven months this year dropped by 18.9 percent compared to the same period last year, the PRO 7 reported in a presentation.

From 15,474 total index crimes recorded from January to July in 2011, this went down to 12,551 cases for the past seven months this year with a difference of 2,923 cases.

Yordan said community awareness plays a huge part in the prevention of crimes because without the support of the public, the police cannot totally do its work in maintaining peace and order.

In Cebu, the NCPW will kick off with a mass at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 3 followed by a short program at the Park Mall in Mandaue City. (FCR-PIA7 Cebu)
