By Juju Manubag-Empuerto
CEBU CITY, Sept 22 (PIA) -- Military personnel from different units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines - Central Command (AFP-Centcom) converged yesterday to celebrate the International Day of Peace or World Peace Day.
Around 550 officers, men and women gathered at Centcom to show the commitment they have in “Winning the Peace” in Visayas region.
Rev. Fr. Bart Sagadal, chaplain of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – 7 officiated a mass at St. Jude Chapel, Camp Lapulapu.
After the mass, a candlelighting followed, and soldiers recited and signed the “Pledge of Peace.”
Acting Centcom Commander, Major General Jose Mabanta Jr. said that with its campaign plan of “Bayanihan,” the winning of peace is the very commitment, more than just a mission, of every military personnel.
The government issued Proclamation No. 675 in 2004 declaring September of every year as the National Peace Consciousness Month to instill greater consciousness among Filipinos on the comprehensive peace process and promote a culture of peace based on nonviolence, respect for fundamental rights and freedom, tolerance, understanding and solidarity.
The theme of this year’s National Peace Consciousness Month is “Ako. Ikaw. Tayo. Magkakaiba, Nagkakaisa sa Kapayapaan.”
It emphasizes the importance of unity despite diversity and the individual participation of each Filipino in moving the peace process forward.
Now on its ninth year, the annual festivity continues its aims of harnessing a culture of peace among different sectors and inspiring them to play their part in achieving a just and lasting peace for the country. (PFCR/JSME/PIA 7-Cebu with CentCom PR)
