DENR-7 welcomes new partners for its river cleanup program

CEBU CITY, July 3 (PIA) --The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 has added four more private companies as partners in its river cleanup program.

Added to the DENR’s roster of partners in its “Adopt-an-Estero” program were Mabuhay Fil Cement, Alta Cebu Resort, Cebu Equal Trading, and JLR Construction Aggregates Inc.

Each of these companies signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with DENR recently, bringing to 17 the total partners of the environment department for the river cleanup program in the region.

DENR 7 Regional Executive Director Dr. Isabelo R. Montejo recognized the initiatives of the partners which would help sustain government efforts to undertake a cleanup and other rehabilitation activities in Butuanon and Guadalupe rivers and their tributaries.

“Necessary interventions and relevant programs towards reviving these major waterways are indeed a welcome move from our partners in the Adopt-an-Estero as they help us in committing to conduct clean up of our creeks and rivers and restore their health,” he said.

Montejo added that with the flooding incidents happening in urban areas, these organizations together with the communities could conduct declogging of trash and other litters on the region's waterways.

He also said that the program promotes good sanitation and solid waste management practices to reduce incidence of water-related diseases and those associated with poor sanitation such cholera, diarrhea, and dengue.

For its part, the DENR, through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), is tasked to provide technical assistance to the involved communities especially in solid waste management. It shall also monitor the water quality and the establishments along the waterways.

Early this year, Maritrans Recycler Inc. and Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. signed a MOA with DENR 7.

Butuanon river is a 23-kilometer water body which originates in the mountain area around Metro Cebu and eventually discharges into Mactan channel with approximately 10-kilometer length of the river crossing Metro Cebu area.

Montejo emphasized the need to sustain the efforts of cleaning up the waterways as he urged the communities to get involved very actively with their local officials and other stakeholders.(PIA-7/HFG/DENR-7)

Cebu business sector lauds PNP’s efforts to maintain peace & order
By Amorganda A. Saludar

CEBU CITY July 3 (PIA) -- The Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) lauded the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Cebu province and the entire Central Visayas for their efforts in maintaining peace and order that guarantee the security of lives and properties of the community and the business sector.

CCCI President Prudencio Gesta said the police play a vital role in improving the business climate that leads to the success of their business.

“The PNP’s efforts in ensuring peace and order would also mean security in investments may it be human, monetary and any other related resources for business,” said Gesta.

According to Gesta, peace and order is very crucial in promoting investors’ confidence in promoting Cebu as an ideal investment haven.

He likewise lauded the intensified measures of the PNP to thwart bank robberies and their relentless pursuit to jail criminals involved in bank heists and robberies of commercial establishments.

Gesta said the police’s anti-crime measures have been successful as evidenced by the declining cases of bank heists and other robberies involving business establishments.

Because of the hard work shown by the police in maintaining a peaceful climate, “the PNP can really expect the business sector of their full support in the implementation of every rule and regulation in order to ensure peace and order and security to lives and properties of the public,” said Gesta.

We are optimistic that we can strengthen the public-private partnership (PPP) between us. We rally for our men and women in the uniform service and maintain the highest level of connection with them. And we are very confident that the business sector will boost through this partnership, Gesta added.

Gesta was the guest speaker during the kick-off ceremony of the 17th Police Community Relations Month held at the Police Regional Office-7 in Cebu City with the theme “Mamayan at Kapulisan: Patuloy ang Ugnayan sa Higit na Ligtas, Mapayapa at Maunlad na Pamayanan.” (FCR/AYS-PIA7 CEBU)
