By Amorganda A. Saludar

CEBU CITY, July 11 (PIA) -- The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO)-Cebu is strictly monitoring the status of the diarrhea outbreak in southern Badian town as the number of cases is expected to rise as it is still in its incubation stage.

IPHO-Cebu head Dr. Cristina Giango said personnel have already been deployed to check and monitor the areas in Badian for possible cases that are not yet reported.

“We already assign some of our personnel to monitor and visit the area to check if there are cases that are not reported, and also to monitor the condition of the area as well,” Giango said.

Aside from personnel deployment, IPHO-Cebu, together with the Department of Health-7, supplied the victims with medicines and aqua tab. They also helped in the conduct of the water supply examination in the area.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, IPHO-Cebu recorded 133 diarrhea cases of which 96 are outpatients while 37 have been admitted. Twenty-six have been discharged and only 11 where left in the district hospital. (FCR/AYS/PIA-7, CEBU)

Cebuano youth leaders bring local culture to Europe, promote better understanding

CEBU CITY, July 12 (PIA) -- Fifteen Cebuanos including 12 youth leaders were sent to an exchange visit in the cities of Haarlemmermeer in the Netherlands and Kortrijk in Belgium from April 14 to May 6 through the Young Minds on Xplore (YMX) Season 3 program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Incorporated (RAFI).

The program was made possible through the partnership with Vereniging Haarlemmermeer Cebu (VHC), the Meerlanden Youth Cebu, and the City of Kortrijk. This was also intended to have a cultural exchange as part of the sister-city relationship between Cebu City and the cities of Haarlemmermeer and Kortrijk.

Young Minds on Xplore (YMX) Season 3 Program focused on providing an avenue for better understanding and appreciation of Cebuano and European cultures, and for cultivating a deeper sense of nationalism among the participants.

For three weeks, the delegates stayed with their Dutch and Belgian host families to better understand their culture and also visited various institutions, organizations and heritage sites.

For better appreciation on European culture and for better understanding on the best practices and systems in Europe, the delegates also visited the Hague, which is the Netherland's seat of government, and the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.

In Belgium, Kortrijk Deputy Mayor Alain Cnudde welcomed the delegates and conducted a brief discussion of the sister-city relationship between Cebu City and Kortrijk.

The delegates were also given an opportunity to visit institutions and organizations such as St. Michiels Church, NOC and the Youth Movement, Oxfam Wereldwinkel Fair Trade, Haaberkrats, AZ Groeninge Hospital, Groep Ubuntu and Acht Kanter.

The delegates were also able to attend the Sunday Lowland Games organized by the City of Kortrijk in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

In the Netherlands, a council session in the City of Haarlemmermeer was held, where the city mayor officially welcomed the delegates. They went to the Meerlanden Sanitary Landfill, NEVISO-Roots for Development, the Cruquiushoeue Stable Center, Spaarne Hospital, and various educational institutions.

The delegates then toured and roamed around the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam and the Jewish Historical Museum and took part in the Dutch national holiday in celebration of Queen Beatrix's birthday.

All through the entire program, the delegates were provided opportunities to meet various groups, institutions, and organizations that are in line with social welfare, youth development, culture and heritage, health, and education and learned through observation the best practices of these groups.

Upon arriving in Cebu, the delegates started working on projects that support the “I Am A Hero and Mega Cebu Project” of RAFI. The participants are also holding talks and discussions of what they have learned in Europe to SK officials, public school teachers and students, and other student organizations while they plan to put up a youth center.

Leadership and Citizenship are part of RAFI’s focus areas, which gathers and nurtures future leaders and influencers ready to effect change. Other focus areas are Integrated Development, Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, and Education.
