PIA-7 joins DAR-7 in potting for forest, fruit trees
CEBU CITY, March 29 (PIA) --- The Philippine Information Agency (PIA-7) in Central Visayas joined the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR-7) in potting plastics with soil that can be used as planting pots for stored fruit and forest seedlings at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 Regional Nursery in Lahug, Cebu City.
The activity was in line with this month’s celebration of Women’s Month with the theme “Women Weathering Climate Change: Governance and Accountability- Everyone’s Responsibility.”
PIA-7 regional director Minerva Newman led the activity and were able to pot 500 plastic bags in almost 2 hours. In sum PIA-7 and DAR-7 filled more than 3000 plastic bags with fertile soil.
Nursery Caretaker Ener Manatad said that the potted plastic bags can contribute a lot to the DENR's aim of filling the 1000 sq.km nursery area with 55 thousand fruit and forest seedlings in plastic pots.
At present the DENR regional nursery was able to gather 35 thousand potted plastic bags including the contribution of PIA and DAR in which some of them were already planted with forests and fruit tree seedlings.
“Dako gyud kaayo og ikatampo ang nahuman karon nga mga potted plastic bags kay daghan-daghan pa gyud ang atong kuwang," Manatad said. (The additional potted plastic bags today contributed a lot to our target since we still need many of these.) (mbcn/AS/PIA-CEBU)
CEBU CITY, March 29 (PIA) -- In preparation for the influx of passengers to bus terminals, seaports and airports during the Holy Week break, provincial and city police offices throughout Central Visayas have already set up a total of 368 public assistance centers (PACs) and 11 motorist assistance centers (MACs).
A larger volume of the PACs are situated in Cebu Province with 103 followed by Bohol with 90 and 83 for Negros Oriental. Siquijor, on the other hand, put up 21 PACs.
Of the 11 MACs, seven are in Negros Oriental and four in Lapulapu City, Cebu.
These PACs and MACs are based in convergent areas such as in the different seaports, bus terminals, airports and even shopping malls. PACs will also be placed near churches beginning April 1 until 8.
According to Police Chief Inspector Harry Lorenzo of the Regional Operations and Plans Division of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7, the public and motorist assistance centers are established to provide safety services to the public and extend help to passengers and commuters.
“Criminals are also deterred from preying victims where there are huge crowd with increased police visibility outside manning the different public assistance centers,” Lorenzo said.
Each PAC is manned by not less than three police personnel.
“The PRO 7 will also be deploying a total of 1,936 personnel to augment the different provincial and city police offices throughout the region,” declared Lorenzo.
S/Supt. Mariano Natuel on the other hand, said he expects crime incidence to go down during the Lenten Season particularly on snatching or hold-up because of increased police visibility.
“A major concern is on attempted robbery or break-in of houses because criminals might take this opportunity to rob homes. With the long holiday, families might take advantage of the period to take a vacation or simply visit their home provinces,” Natuel bared.
Natuel asked the public to never forget to lock their homes when they leave or ask a trusted neighbor to watch over their house when they go out.
“We ask the public to also adopt security measures in protecting their homes from attempted break-in,” said Natuel.
The Regional Intelligence Division of the PRO-7 however, assured the public that no intelligence reports were received yet regarding the entry of any threats to Cebu or any other provinces in Region 7 that will disrupt the observance of the Lenten period. (PIA-Cebu)

PNP 7 conducts ‘pulong-pulong’ in brgys. on violence against women
By Fayette C. RienThursday
CEBU CITY, March 29 (PIA) -- Police personnel under the Women’s and Children’s Protection Desks (WCPC) of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 are regularly conducting ‘pulong-pulong’ in the barangays to educate women of their rights particularly from domestic violence.
“Though we celebrate March as Women’s Month, our education drive continues all-year round especially in the grassroots level to inform women of their rights under RA 9710 or the Magna Carta for Women,” according to Police Senior Inspector Rosefiela Santolorin of the WCPC.
As law enforcers, Santolorin said apart from educating women of their basic rights, they also placed emphasis on the need to report such cases of violence.
“We stress the need for women to speak up against such abuses and to report it to the police,” said Santolorin.
For the past two months, the WCPC recorded 311 cases involving violence against women (VAW).
“The number of cases from January to February, this year actually decreased by about six percent or from 360 cases of the same period last year down to 311 cases this year,” bared Santolorin.
Santolorin also added that they are conducting house visitation in the barangays to bring the advocacy against VAW in the homes.
The WCPC meanwhile, is also targeting schools for their training and lectures on anti human trafficking.
“We are targeting the youths and educating them on human trafficking as they are most susceptible to illegal recruiters,” the police official added. (PIA-Cebu)
