By Fayette C. Rien
CEBU CITY, Feb. 26 (PIA) -- A simple mass has marked the 25th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power in Cebu yesterday at the Redemptorist Church in Cebu City.
Seen at the mass were two public officials who were then human rights activists when the People Power Revolution erupted in 1986.
Judge Meinrado Paredes of the Regional Trial Court here and Atty. Democrito Mendoza, President Aquino’s appointee as a member of the Philippine National Oil Company-Shipping and Transport Corporation (PNOC-STC) board heard mass together with their respective families.
Both public officials were imprisoned during the martial law years for their opposition to the late president Ferdinand Marcos.
Paredes and Barcenas called on the people especially the Cebuanos not to forget the lessons of EDSA particularly the most valuable of all, the valuable freedom that we are enjoying today as a result of it.
Barcenas echoed President Aquino’s message of the celebration that the EDSA fight is not yet over as even up to this day, the battle against corruption and poverty continues.
Paredes and Barcenas urged all Filipinos to remember their history and the roots of the country’s independence and freedom because a lot of people shed their blood for the sake of the nation. (PIA-Cebu)
