DOH-7 urges public to beware of fake drugs
By Fayette C. RiƱen

‘Nov. 21-25 is Nat’l Consciousness Week Against Counterfeit Drugs’
CEBU CITY, November 25 (PIA) -- As the country observes the National Consciousness Week Against Counterfeit Medicine every third week of November, the public is urged to be vigilant against fake drugs in the market.

Elizabeth Tabasa, head of the Licensing Regulation and Enforcement Division of the Department of Health (DOH) 7 asked the public to always ask the assistance of the pharmacist and to ask for an official receipt every time they purchase their medicines.

“Never buy medicines from peddlers just found in the street especially those with foreign markings,” Tabasa stressed.

Tabasa advised the public to only buy their medicines in FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-licensed pharmacies or drug stores “because one is assured that the drug they buy is genuine and not fake.”

Tabasa also said to check the written information on the label whether this is written in English. “Under the law, the label should be in English. If not, then it must be a counterfeit drug,” according to the DOH-7 official.

Usually, counterfeit tablets are not uniform in color so one must always check if the drugs have the same color, Tabasa added.

“One must also check with suspension drugs that in mixing the powder with water, no solid particles are seen,” Tabasa disclosed.

Tabasa said their office is regularly conducting spot inspections on pharmacies and drug stores for counterfeit drugs.

“If one is dubious, one can call our office here or e-mail to i.report.fda@gmail.com,” Tabasa ended.
Under RA 8203 or the Special Law on Counterfeit Drugs, violators will be meted with a fine  ranging from P100,000 up to a maximum of P500,000 and imprisonment of six months to 10 years. (PIA-Cebu)
