PHL-German Renewable Energy Forum set in Cebu City on Nov. 24
By Fayette C. Riñen

CEBU CITY, November 21 (PIA) – Tapping the potential of solar energy/PV in the Philippines will be highlighted in a “Philippine-German Renewable Energy Forum” slated this Thursday in Cebu City as a delegation from the German Government will share their knowledge and expertise on the matter.

The forum in cooperation with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and undertaken by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology aims to promote renewable energy sources in Southeast Asia where the Philippines is a member.

Under the Aquino Administration, the Renewable Energy Program of the Department of Energy is a top priority given the fluctuating prices of fuel in the global market which is significantly affecting the country’s economy. The Philippines is hugely dependent on imported fuel for power and transportation needs as its long-term goal is to tap renewable sources of energy abundant in Philippine shores such as solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal.

The German photovoltaics (PV) technology on the other hand, is being used by other countries, converting this energy to electricity for grid-connected and off-grid systems. The PV can play an important role in providing reliable access to power especially with the soaring energy demand of the growing Asian economies where energy access gap and the threat of frequent power outages are real, this is said.

In the Philippines, PV technology is applicable given its excellent natural conditions in the use of solar energy. Particularly in remote areas, PV applications can provide a cost-efficient and independent alternative. The technology make it possible to generate and use electrical energy independently of existing power grids, dispensing with the high cost of constructing power grids over long distances.

A group of global technology leaders from Germany will be offering their broad range of technical solutions in the field of solar PV as the forum also aims to initialize business partnerships between German and Philippine companies in order to foster technology and know-how transfer as well as the development of the Philippine PV market. The One Country, One Voice (OCOV) is a core program of the DTI and it aims to enable stakeholders to participate actively in trade policymaking.  It seeks to engage stakeholders before and after entering trade agreements; enable negotiators to respond to issues with due consideration of the Philippine position based on studies and research; and enhance coordination among government agencies.

Exporters, importers, customs broker, freight forwarders, business support groups and members of the academe and the media are urged to attend the consultation sessions so the government can hear their views and sentiments regarding the economic partnership agreement between Japan and the Philippines.

The DTI is also calling on al stakeholders in Cebu to submit their position paper on their comments regarding the impact of the PJEPA, which will be considered in the formulation of the Philippine agenda for the forthcoming review in December.
