CEBU CITY, August 12 (PIA) -- IN support of Pres. Aquino’s National Greening Program (NGP) that calls for massive reforestation of denuded lands, the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) inked an agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-7 to reforest 145 hectares of land in Cebu within the next six years.
MCWD has always been an active partner in reforestation projects as part of our commitment to Mother Nature, according to Dianne Rallon of MCWD-Environment and Water Resources Division.
Rallon said the specific areas for the reforestation have yet to be identified but these are within the program areas of their agency.
MCWD is also urging the public to plant trees in their areas and help fight climate change and preserve the environment, this is said.
The water facility has a nursery that produces an average of 300,000 seedlings a year as it urged those who are interested to plant trees such as mahogany, acacia, molave and fruit trees in their areas can avail of their seedlings, Rallon said.
Inside the mini-forest of MCWD’s D’ Family Park in Talamban, Cebu City, at least 1,000 acacia rain tree, mahogany and dita were planted.
Last May, Pres. Aquino launched the NGP with the target goal of reforesting some 1.5M hectares of degraded forest lands until 2016 and developed a sustainable forest resource base to hasten the national greening campaign.
The government’s call to go on massive tree planting comes in the wake of the ill-effects of global warming which include heaving flooding, landslides and flashfloods. (PIA 7-Cebu)
