‘as 3-day Reg’l Invention Contests & Exhibits open in Cebu’
CEBU CITY, August 18 (PIA) -- Twenty-five inventors are currently showcasing their innovative creations at the Ayala Center Cebu as the three-day 2011 Central Visayas Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-7 kicked off yesterday afternoon.

The inventions ranged from promoting food security to natural prospective treatments for various diseases such as skin asthma, gallstones and colon cancer to wind energy and mobile community trash collection to address climate change.

By tomorrow afternoon, five inventions will be chosen for particular awards based on specific category and the inventors will have the opportunity to showcase their invention in the national level and vie for the national awards which will be held next year.

Up for grabs are the awards on Outstanding Invention, Outstanding Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Category), Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for High School and Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for College.

According to Engr. Jesselito Baring, the president of the Visayas Inventors Association, there are many inventors in Central Visayas but the problem lies in the venue for displaying their products as he stressed the need for more invention exhibits for inventors to participate.

Baring said there a lot of innovative Filipino people that can produce creative designs and products which can be proudly shown off and called on government for more support and assistance to Filipino inventors.

Engr. Edgar Garcia, DOST-Technology Application and Promotions Institute Director on the other hand, said all regions nationwide through the DOST regional offices are conducting their own RICE activity to provide a venue and motivate local inventors to participate and display their products for public viewing.

“This also forms part of the national government’s support to push local inventors to produce innovative designs and products that will benefit the Filipino people and the country,” Garcia said. (PIA 7-Cebu)
