Cebu City Police leads anti-drug rally
By Fayette C. Riñen

CEBU CITY, June 24 (PIA) --- Showing their strength in the continuing battle against illegal drugs, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will lead in this afternoon’s anti-drug rally inside the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda in the heart of the city as it launches the ‘Movement Against Illegal Drugs’ or MAD.

The MAD is a brainchild of CCPO Police Director S/Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe who said most crimes are committed due to drugs or drug-related offenses.

“Eighty percent of those behind bars at the Cebu City jail are convicted due to drug-related crimes,” Buenafe disclosed citing records from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology office here.

Buenafe has solicited the support of other sectors in their campaign as students, non-government organizations and even the business group will be joining the anti-drug rally this afternoon.

“The public will also hear for the first time the MAD jingle that we have composed to strengthen our impact to the community and hopefully, stir them to get involve in the war against illegal drugs,” Buenafe bared.

Street children who will sing the MAD jungle will highlight the rally as Buenafe revealed his other main project ‘Piso-Piso Para sa Mga Batang Lansangan’ which he plans to launch Thursday of next week.

“My other project for the street children is more on feeding them and taking them away from the streets and teaching them values,” Buenafe said.

Buenafe added that there is a big possibility that street children, without the proper guidance, will someday turn into criminals becoming snatchers or pickpockets. “I want the police to be the role models for these street children so that in our little way, we can help them become better citizens,” Buenafe stressed.

The city police chief said illegal drugs is a major culprit in the rise in criminality “so we need to get our acts together and we need the public’s support in our relentless fight against illegal drugs.” (PIA 7-Cebu)
