CEBU CITY, May 12 (PIA) - The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will conduct free assessment to workers in the construction industry to help them secure National Certificates (NC) which will elevate their status.

Jing Jaime, Head of TESDA’s Assessment and Certification Unit, in an interview with PIA, said this is part of their advocacy to “professionalize” the workers in the vocational sector by issuing certificates that is based on international standards.

Jaime informed they will be conducting the free assessment and issuance of certificates on June 27 until July 1.This, according to him, constitutes the second run of their campaign to provide free certification to technical workers. ]

The first run, was held last March, while the third run will be held this coming August, Jaime bared. During the first run they were able to serve 1,776 applicants, he further informed.

TESDA is targeting 5,000 workers for this program, Jaime disclosed.

Along this line, the TESDA official urged construction workers to visit any of their provincial offices and avail of their free assessment and processing of certificates.

The normal process of securing a certificate, he noted, will cost more or less around P500.00.

“But if they come between June 27 to July 1, they can undergo assessment for free and if they pass, they can get their certificates within that week without any cost,” Jaime said. (FCR/ECD/PIA 7-Cebu)

Comelec calls on Quino’s supporter to stay calm
By Eli C. Dalumpines

CEBU CITY, May 12 (PIA) – Cebu Provincial Comelec Supervisor Atty. Lionel Castillano, in a radio interview this morning, called on supporters of Compostela Mayor-elect Joel Quino to stay calm and give the Commission on Elections time to resolve the electoral protest filed by his opponent former mayor Ritchie Wagas.

Castillano issued the call amid tensions escalating in Compostela town, 25 kilometers northeast from here, after Quino and his supporters took over the Municipal Hall yesterday to demand for the speedy resolution of the case.

According to him, the Compostela electoral protest is now at the Comelec en banc awaiting resolution.

The Comelec official informed he approached the newly-appointed Comelec Commissioner Christian Robert Lim, during their meeting in Manila last week, to solicit his assistance on this matter.

Commissioner Lim, Castillano said, promised to help in resolving the case within two weeks but that was overtaken by Quino’s takeover of the Municipal Hall yesterday which resulted to a stand off.

However, Cebu Provincial Police Office chief S/Supt Patrocino Comendador negotiated with Quino and his supporters this morning for them to vacate the place to which they promised to do anytime today but not after the police official assured them that he would bring their concern to Comelec.

Castillano informed that he had initially told Comelec Regional Director Atty. Rey Rene T. Buac regarding the incident in Compostela but he said that he will submit a narrative report today to keep Comelec Central Office abreast of the situation.

To recall, Quino was proclaimed winner of the mayoralty race in Compostela in last year’s election but said the proclamation was nullified after the defeated candidate, former mayor Ritchie Wagas, filed an election protest before the Comelec. (FCR/ECD/PIA 7-Cebu)
