Oversupply of courses, other courses to consider says CHED

CEBU CITY, May 11 (PIA) --- The Commission of Higher Education (CHED) declared that there is an oversupply of some courses in the country that outstrips its demand in the labor market.

CHED assistant regional director Candelario Aytona said this during the weekly AGIO Forum at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) recently.

Aytona cited some courses that should not be taken up by incoming college freshmen because of its high number of graduates and these are Nursing, Information Technology Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management and business courses.

"This is why these courses are temporarily not being offered and closed by some school," Aytona said.

Agriculture is on of the courses Aytona mentioned that student should look into because of its relevance to the needs of the global economy.

He stated that if one is enrolled in agricultural courses, it doesn’t mean that he will be a farmer after graduating.

"He can be employed in a research center like International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) or into agri-business," Aytona said.

He added that environment conservation course is one course that schools has not offered yet but it is a very important and relevant course today.

In the same forum, Aytona also discussed the programs CHED offers to students who can not afford to finish their studies.

Aytona said, CHED has the Student Financial Assistance Program that is funded by the national government.  Tulong Dunong is another program that assists poor but deserving students.

Another is the Congressional Assistance wherein students can receive P2,500 per semester and the Study Now,Pay Later program that students can avail of to finish their studies.

CHED-7 prioritizes its clients for its financial assistance programs because they want to be sure that only those students who really need it and at the same time deserve it can avail of those programs. (PIA-7/Chrisley Ann C. Hinayas,

By: Minerva BC Newman

CEBU CITY , May 11 (PIA) --- Five (5) young students from the secondary and tertiary level schools in Cebu qualified as “Jose P. Rizal Youth Exemplar” based on a nationwide search that the Philippine Center for Gifted Education initiated this year.

The nationwide search aims to find 35 children and youth who are willing to commit their lives to the ideals and principles of the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal in line with the celebration of his 150th birthday on June 19, 2011.

The five youth from Cebu are Leslie Estaniel of the University of Cebu ; Mark Cedrick Antonino of the University of San Jose Recoletos ; Miko Cabatingan from Abellana NHS; Serge Lorenz Villasica of Mandaue City Science High and Ezekiel Majan of the Cebu City National Science High.

They will join the other 30 children and youth from all over the country to take an oath as ‘exemplars’ of what a complete Filipino youth is as Jose Rizal envisioned them to be.

They will take their oath on June 17, 2011 at the CCP Complex with no less than the President, Benigno Simeon Aquino III leading the oath taking ceremony.

They will also commit their lives to emulate Rizal, the national hero, and help elevate Filipino consciousness for a life of integrity, dignity, truth, honesty and love of country and be eager to motivate other Filipinos to do the same.

In respond to the search, the Regional Development Council in Central Visayas created a selection committee composed of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA); Department of Education (DepEd); Civil Service Commission (CSC); Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG); Cebu City National Science High School and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

The committee was tasked to put the search in motion and there were only 12 nominees that the RDC-Selection Committee accepted and screened.

The six (6) nominees from the secondary level included students from Pianar MNHS in Bogo City ; Cebu City National Science High school ; Abellana National Science High school ; Tipolo National Science High School in Mandaue City and Mandaue City Science High School .

The four (4) nominees from the tertiary level included students from the Cebu Normal University ; Cebu Doctors College ; UCLM and USJR.

These nominees were rated according to the individual areas of interest and skills represented by Gardner ’s multiple intelligences that include linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, social and naturalistic.

They were also rated on how they manifest love of God and country based on individual interviews and essay on what aspect or nature of Rizal can they expound upon that a modern day youth can relate to and is very relevant in the modern times.

The search is also supported by the National Historical Commission, the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Tanghalang Pilipino as well as the various regional development councils in the country. (PIA-7)
