Int'l NGO salutes nurses around the world on 'International Nurses Day'

MANILA,  May 14 (PIA) --- Health Care Without Harm (HCWHI-SEAsia), an internationally-based NGO salutes all nurses around the globe on International Nurses Day being celebrated in almost all countries in the world on May 12 every year.

HCWH-SEAsia program officer, Faye Ferrer said nurses have always been in the forefront of bringing together the issue of health and environment.

Ferrer said, International Nurses Day is an opportunity Ito learn about the work of nurses and their contribution to improving environmental health. This year, Health Care Without Harm is proud to celebrate the fantastic work that nurses are doing around the globe.

"Every day, nurses are tasked with the noble duty of healing the sick, ensuring patients' comfort, facilitating their fast recovery and making sure that they are well taken care of.  Their healing ability gives them the understanding in the field of environmental health protection,"  Ferrer added.

According to Ferrrer,   nurses serve their communities in many different ways. The most familiar  is working in a health care facility.  But in recent years nurses have rediscovered their profession’s traditional environmental health roots.

The U.S. Climate Policy coordinator of HCWH, Brenda Afzal  who is also a nurse herself, commends nurses of their understanding on the importance clean air, clean water, good food and a safer working environment as very crucial to health.

"We see from our positions in hospitals, schools, and communities that environmental exposures can disproportionately affect vulnerable populations and add to health disparities. As nurses we also understand that disease prevention is part of our role," Afzal added.

Dr. María Della Rodolfa, Health Care Without Harm Latin America Program Coordinator on the other hand said, in   Latin America, nurses are the leading actors proposing initiatives that seek to promote green practices that do no harm to people and the environment.

Their particular activities and practices and their dedication to help others make them leaders in working for healthier toxic-free environment, said Rdolfa.

The HCWH Europe executive director,  Anja Leetz also stated that nurses' experiences with patients are invaluable. They create healing environments for patients by improving air quality, noise, light and irreplaceable human interaction.

“In Europe we need the nursing profession to drive change and be a role model by making health care safe for both people and the environment," Leetz declared. (PIA-7/Minerva BC Newman with reports from  Health Care Without Harm)
