Families of Cebuano victims in NZ quake
ruins brace for worst news ahead
Cebu City, March 01 (PIA) -- Families of at least five Cebuano student nurses still missing in the quake ruins in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand (NZ) continue to pray for their safety but are bracing for the worst news ahead as NZ police authorities said survivors a week after the tragedy is very slim.
A mass was offered yesterday at the Sacred Heart Church in Cebu City for the Filipino victims of the quake disaster attended by some of the families of the Cebuano victims.
“Since there is no definite news yet, we have to hold on to hope,” according to the officiating priest in an interview over local ABS CBN News.
Dr. Ethel Uy, aunt of one of the victims Rhea Mae Sumalpong, tearfully said the family is planning to go to New Zealand for the DNA testing as seven bodies of the 11 Filipinos have been reportedly retrieved from the rubble.
We cannot do anything anymore as the NZ police already said chances are slim for any survivors at this time. We are just bracing for the bad news ahead. In case there are really no survivors, then all we request is to bring back the body home,” Uy slowly said in a resigned note.
But families of the Cebuano victims appealed to the NZ police authorities to continue their search and rescue operations still clinging to the hope that their loved ones have survived with non-stop prayers as their only refuge in this period of darkness.
As of the latest count, there have been 148 bodies that were retrieved from the quake ruins, according to the local news report while 200 people are still missing.
Only the family of Sumalpong was able to submit the medical and dental records of Rhea Mae per requirement of the NZ police authorities as part of the identification procedure. The other families have yet to submit the records of their kin, this is learned.
Families have also been informed that two members of the immediate family can fly to NZ to check the status and identify the Filipino bodies that were retrieved at their own cost.
As this developed, the families of the victims are asking the Philippine Government for assistance so they could go to NZ and identify their loved one but no assurance has been given by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), this was said.
Bill Santillan, brother-in-law of one of the victims John Kristoffer Chua, personally visited the office of Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia to seek for assistance. The governor however, was in Manila.
Arnulfo Medalle, father of victim Ezra Mae Medalle, appealed to Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III for help because until now, they have yet to receive any latest updates from the DFA.
“We just want the body to be brought home,” according to Medalle. (PIA-Cebu/Fayette C. Riñen)
